Accountability Discussion - Long Beach

This is a forum to discuss contributors to PROP H8, their related companies, and balance for the Invalidate 8 campaign. We also want to bevery fair. Should we be angry with a business that supports our community when a family member makes a $100 donation to support 8?

Speak out, and share your views. This is not a forum to simply bash companies. We want to make friends and allies and bring people to our side. We can only do that with fairness and balance. So these dicussions are the most important ones that we can have.

Obviously WKS was at the top of the list in Long Beach. They are franchisees of El Pollo Loco, Denny's, and Corner Bakery Cafe. So far we have only been in touch with WKS and El Pollo Loco.

I think that Corner Bakery and Denny's need a chance to balance this out. I am hopeful that they will be responsive and balance out the actions of Mr. Spongberg of WKS in Long Beach.

Next on the list I think should be Majestic Realty. Their controller made a big contribution to Prop 8. I think Gay customers shopping for houses in Long Beach would like to know what Majestic is doing to balance that situation.

I also noticed many employees from Boeing making big contributions, although they aren't as much a consumer business as Majestic, or WKS-- and this just the first few items on the list people, and only in Long Beach.

We have a LOT more names to cover. Please help!

Hey Shawn'
Here is link for the story for LB Reports
So what is the deal for FRIDAY NIGHT at Cinemark? Flyers at Hot Java might be another good way to spread the word.

Hey Joe! Thanks man! I read it your historical knowledge of boycotts was very impressive! :)

Yes the Cinemark thing is on for the 12th at 7:00 PM. Event details are on the site (click all events) and any promotion you can do would be awesome.

I've got it up on JoinTheImpact and another site that has lots of events.

Are you down to do it with me? It would be great to have help organizing this one!!

This is really a tough issue.

I do not think that we should target businesses which support civil rights, because a member of their family contributed to pass Proposition 8. As for boycotting businesses who directly contributed to the passage, I believe we should definitely boycott.

Taking established rights away from a group of people is criminal, that's how I see it. This past May, the court interpreted the California constitution (the law) to include everyone. Proposition 8 excludes a minority. As history has shown: this is against the law.

I do not see monetary contributions as a form of free speech. It's one thing to verbally support an army, it is completely different to supply that army with armaments. You are now aiding and abetting in a crime.

We need to keep this issue in the minds of the people. We shall keep this vigil, like the Silent Sentinels before us, who did not give up until they were able to have a voice in their government.

We are citizens of this country and will settle for nothing less than our full and equal rights.

I agree, and feel that the litmus test is weather we want to support this person or that person, and this organization or that organization, based on their stance on equal rights. And I feel that an organization closely associated with an individual that opposes equality should be given an opportunity to repudiate that discrimination and affirm equal rights.

So, I think Cinemark qualifies for protest. I think Corner Bakery should state their belief in equality.

Is that similar to what you are saying?

Kindly,

Given Denny's long history of racism, aren't they a lost cause?

Where is Corner Bakery Cafe?

Hi Fernando! Corner Bakery Cafe is located in CA, CO, DC, GA, IL, MD, PA, TX, and VA.

Good point about Denny's. They have had problems in the past.

Denny's should make a commitment to equal rights. If they do this, it would be a step in the right direction for them, and a step towards reconciliation with LBGT. I would love to see all of the groups that have experienced a form of discrimination in connection with Denny's to inquire about Denny's commitment to equal rights. :)
