[...]Today I am saddened by what the proponents of Proposition 8 have done. As a heterosexual married family man, I am not an advocate of gay rights. Neither am I an advocate of discrimination, regardless of the form it takes.
Having spent the major part of my adult life trying to discern what the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth are and how I can apply them to my life, I feel strongly that those who call themselves his disciples have missed the essential point of his life and teaching by advocating the ban on same sex marriages.
From what I understand about Jesus' life, he always included everyone in his compassionate regard and saw in all the potential of a spiritual possibility and did everything in his power to nurture and foster the spiritual awakening of that individual. Every culture has its "despised" class, and in Jesus' day it was the Samaritan. In his teaching on who is my neighbor, Jesus taught the lawyer that enduring lesson on brotherly love that should inspire his present day followers to seriously reconsider their support of discrimination. There is tremendous support for equality among people of faith. They have supported us on
Light Up the Night and we need to do what we can to support them.
